IBB PAS in the Polish Research Infrastructure Roadmap
On 4 August 2026, the Minister of Science and Higher Education, Marcin Kulasek, approved the updated Polish Research Infrastructure Roadmap (PRIR), which includes strategic research infrastructures of key importance for the development of science and innovation in Poland. In the updated PRIR, the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBB PAS) is the applicant for three strategic research infrastructures and participates as a partner in four additional infrastructures.
IBB PAS is the applicant institution for the following entries in the Polish Roadmap for Research Infrastructures (PRIR):
- Polish Multidisciplinary Laboratory for Polar Research (PolarPOL)- a national research infrastructure serving as Poland’s contribution to the international polar research infrastructure. Applicant: IBB PAS. Partner: Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IGF PAS).
- Centre for the Development of Research Models for the Treatment of Infectious Diseases (CRMBT)- a national research infrastructure. Applicant: IBB PAS. Partners: National Medicines Institute (NIL) and the Ludwik Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IIET PAS.
- MASSTRIM – MASs Spectrometry platform for Translational Research and Innovative Medicine- a national research infrastructure. Applicant: IBB PAS.
IBB PAS is a partner institution for the following entries in the Polish Roadmap for Research Infrastructures (PRIR):
- Polish Natural Collections – Biodiversity Research Infrastructure – a national research infrastructure serving as Poland’s contribution to the ESFRI Roadmap research infrastructure. Applicant: University of Warsaw.
- CePT–ICBS Interdisciplinary Centre for Research on Ageing to Improve Quality of Life – a national research infrastructure. Applicant: Medical University of Warsaw.
- PL – a national research infrastructure serving as Poland’s contribution to the ESFRI Roadmap research infrastructure. Applicant: Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań.
- POL-OPENSCREEN – Polish Screening Platform for Chemical Biology – a national research infrastructure serving as Poland’s contribution to the ESFRI Roadmap research infrastructure. Applicant: Institute of Medical Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Łódź.
PolarPOL has been included in the Polish Roadmap for Research Infrastructures (PRRI) since 2011. The continuation and further development of this research infrastructure are aligned with the Strategy for Polish Polar Research 2017–2027, supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the period 2025–2028, PolarPOL will be based on two year-round research stations: the Henryk Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station (PASA) and the Polish Polar Station Hornsund (PPSH), together with their unique field laboratory facilities. A key challenge for the coming years is to prepare both stations for participation in the Fifth International Polar Year (2032–2033), the planning of which is currently in the final phase of its first stage.
CRMBT is a state-of-the-art research infrastructure dedicated to the development of innovative therapies for bacterial infections, with a particular focus on infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The Centre will support research on novel therapeutic approaches based on bacteriophages, nanobodies, antagonistic bacteria, and their bioactive metabolites (e.g. bacteriocins). The infrastructure will integrate advanced biological models, including Caenorhabditis elegans as an in vivo high-throughput screening model, in vitro and ex vivo systems that recapitulate the complex interactions between therapeutics, pathogens, the microbiome, and the host (including three-dimensional [3D] epithelial cell cultures, immune cells, and a dynamic gastrointestinal tract model), together with omics technologies, bioinformatics, mass spectrometry, and molecular modelling. These complementary approaches will enable the identification, efficacy assessment, and safety evaluation of novel therapeutic candidates. By combining these capabilities, CRMBT will accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into therapeutic prototypes, thereby strengthening efforts to address the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
MASSTRIM is a state-of-the-art research infrastructure built on more than 25 years of experience of the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory at the IBB PAS – the largest centre of its kind in Poland and one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. Its goal is to develop innovative tools for translational and personalised medicine. The platform combines advanced proteomic and metabolomic technologies with bioinformatics, enabling the comprehensive analysis of thousands of proteins and metabolites in biological and clinical samples. The development of the MASSTRIM infrastructure is already underway – over the past two years, the platform has acquired two state-of-the-art Orbitrap Astral mass spectrometers. The new instruments enable highly sensitive analyses of very low-input samples, as well as the rapid analysis of large clinical cohorts. MASSTRIM will support biomarker discovery and validation and the development of diagnostic, prognostic, and therapy-monitoring panels. It will also provide technological support for biobanks and projects conducted in collaboration with research institutions, clinical centres, and the biomedical sector. By combining these capabilities, the platform will accelerate the translation of molecular discoveries into new diagnostic tools and solutions supporting treatment selection and monitoring.
